A rule breaker…well, that’s not a phrase that we usually think of to describe Jesus; but in His day and age, our Jesus broke some rules. What people tend to forget when studying scripture is that it wasn’t written in 2018. a lot of people read the Bible with the mindset that Jesus’ culture had the same rules that we have today in 2018, but they didn’t. Back in Jesus’ time it wasn’t okay to talk freely to women, it wasn’t okay to let children run and play while a person in a religious position was speaking to the adults, it wasn’t right to speak to a cripple, or help someone on the sabbath, or converse with an adulterer. There was rule after rule after rule about what people could do, say, wear, eat, or to whom they may talk. It’s important to know before reading this blog and what I have to say about Jesus being a rule-breaker, that every rule that Jesus broke was a man-made rule. The rules he broke were designed by the religious leaders to make it so they looked better, and to exert their power. Jesus never broke a single rule that was made by God, and He broke the rules made by man to prove that faith has so much more to do with relationship than with rules.
I consider our Jesus to be the definition of the words “watch me”. All these rules in His society had been set up to put down the rule breakers–to make women, children, people of a different ethnic race, lepers, cripples, or anyone who at any point in time had broken one of the ten commandments feel unworthy. Thankfully, Jesus didn’t come for just the high profile religious leaders, He also came for those people who were classified as rule breakers. And because Jesus also came for those people, He spent a lot of time with them, so He also got the reputation of a rule breaker…and y’all, He kind of was! Everytime the Pharisees would try to tell Jesus that there was a rule preventing Him from trying to minister, I feel like I can just see Jesus saying, “Watch me!”, and going for it! And guess what? Because our God is so so good, and because He also chooses the lowly and the sinners, we are all made welcome in His kingdom because He breaks the rules for all of us. I promise you, there is technically a rule that would keep all of us from being considered righteous in the culture in Jesus’ day, but Jesus says, “Watch me” and makes us righteous in His name. And Jesus did this all the stinking time y’all! He broke the rules to pursue people’s hearts, and He does the same today for you and for me! I mean, yall, I’m not just talking about breaking rules one or two times…I’m talking almost every single time…check it out:
Y’all there are so many more rules that Jesus had held out to Him as a standard for behavior where He said, “Watch me”, all because He was making a way for all of us to be able to come to Him. He breaks down the stupid man-made rules because rules shouldn’t hold us back from a relationship with Him. He will defy the rules, tears down the walls, leave the 99 to get you because He WANTS you!! He says, “Watch my reckless love, my relentless grace, and my wild side chase after you!!” You are so so so loved sweet friends!! What a beautiful, majestic, powerful, loving God we serve!! You are priceless!!
Oh, and let’s not forget the most awesome rule that Jesus broke:
