I have seen it happen– when we try to rely on people and things to suffice us. That is impossible. The human high is impossible; the joy that we get from being popular or having fun with our friends or the high of life, it’s all temporary. The high may last a few seconds to a few days at most. We can not fully satisfy our needs as humans; we can not fully heal our pain, we can not appease our addictions, everything we have and feel is temporary. The excitements and joy from the high are brief, and the brokenness and hurt and the need for more come right back in after; I see the need for it in my everyday life, the constant reliance on the world to fix us, to tell us what to do, or to heal our broken hearts, or make us popular. But I have seen this fail; it has failed me. You can not rely on others or things to make you feel better, to put you back together, to “fix” you. Why? Despite how much we want to help one another, we cannot give an eternal answer…the high or help we can give never seems to last. The answer is plain and simple; we are human, we do not have the power to fix one another or to suffice someone fully, we only give a temporary high. So it looks hopeless, doesn’t it? We can’t help one another so why even try? We can help one another, but in a different way than we all think. Who can fully suffice? Who can bring you overwhelming joy constantly? Whose love alone could heal your broken heart? Who can suffice the need to feel the “high”? God can. His power is everlasting, and His love is ongoing and overflowing, for He IS Love. He is eternal. So how can we help one another? We can push each other towards the one who can suffice, toward the one who can heal, toward God. How can we do that? Let’s find out…
First, let’s talk about the high itself. What is the high? The high can be anything, the joy you get when you are out with your friends, or the way that being the center of attention makes you feel, anything that makes you feel worthy and popular but not in the right way. The high is a work of the flesh, and the flesh and the world are temporary. Everything we have is temporary, human flesh and its desires are temporary, our high is temporary. Even the good things are temporary, our favorite clothes, items, books, movies, everything we have is temporary. “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away. Matthew 24:35…that is said three times in the gospels, so it must be important right?! What else does that say? That God’s words will never pass away and neither will God. A high that I commonly see people seeking is popularity and the means of achieving it. Another high people believe in is that if you are well-liked and turn to your friends, your pain will stop. I see this with a lot of girls my age because after a time of hurt and pain we commonly turn to one another to help us feel better, but that state of comfort and safety is soon lost because we relied on humans. Humans are not perfect, we all will fade, we disappoint, and we can try our hardest to make it better, but in the end, we only give a temporary high and can only make it feel better for a temporary amount of time. If you are at a time of hurt and pain, you need to rely on God and not on others to make it better, because God is perfect and He is everlasting. He will not fail you, and he will not mess up at all.
So, how can we help one another? As I said up there, encourage each other to rely on God. Point to Christ. Remind each other that the human high is temporary, but God’s high lasts all eternity. “The LORD shall reign forever and ever.”Exodus 15:18. He is forever; His love is forever, and everything about Him is forever. He is everlasting and the high He gives will not only fully suffice you, but will last you all eternity. His love will fill you, the joy from knowing Him will make you radiant, and talking to Him is like talking to an old friend. He WILL suffice.” Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God” 2 Corinthians 3:5, it is from God that we are truly sufficed, and when we have Him, there is truly no need for a human high. Remind each other of this, pray that everyone you know will remember that and encourage one another to focus on God and not the human high. “Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11, continue to encourage, pray, and push one another to remember that God is enough and that you are enough for Him.
So, keep this in mind when you feel the need for the high, or when you feel lonely, or want to be popular–God is enough and the joy that you can find in Him surpasses anything that any person or thing on earth can offer. He can give true, lasting joy and contentment. Love y’all so much and I’m praying for y’all. And remember, you are priceless💜
